Billed as the most sustainable shopping centre in the world, Burwood Brickworks is one of Frasers Property most bold projects to date. This community-scale development will feature an exciting new shopping centre, parkland and civic plaza, 15km East of Melbourne’s CBD, in the City of Whitehorse. The retail centre will include a large proportion of food and beverage outlets, plus destination and experienced-based retail.
The $115m mall will house a commercially operated urban farm on its roof, recycle rain and waste water and create enough power through solar panels to be net energy positive.
The project achieved 6 Star Green Star Design and As-Built rating and is on track to achieve Living Building Challenge (LBC) certification, making it the first net zero carbon and energy positive retail development in Australia.
The prefabricated mall will include the use of sustainably sourced laminated timber and recycled bricks along with 3900 square metres of billabong plantings and 2000 square metres of vines while up to 99 per cent of construction waste will be repurposed rather than become landfill.
Cundall have been providing ESD consulting services for the development, which has included initial guidance on achieving a LBC certification and also acting as the Green Star Accredited Professional (GSAP) for its 6-Star Design Review rating achievement.
